Relations Morocco / Algeria: Rabat wants normalization

The Western Sahara conflict could see the end? Hope everything is permitted, although this remains a hope.

The Moroccan Foreign Minister Taieb Fassi Fihri has in fact indicated in Tripoli Sunday that his country wanted a normalization "early" in its relations with Algeria and the opening of the border between the two countries, closed since 1994 . It is allowed to dream ...

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of heads of diplomacy of the five countries of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), the Minister has said: "We all hope caressons in Morocco that the possibility of normalization with Algeria can be done as soon as possible and as soon as possible. "

Of course, the thorny issue of Western Sahara can only resurface at this time. Mr. Fihri recalled that Morocco and proposed for more than three years as the conflict moves to the UN and this problem has more direct impact on bilateral relations and the prospects of construction of the UMA.

"It'sa win-win + + at all levels", has also felt the Moroccan Minister.

Founded on 17 February 1989 by Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia, UMA is down since 1994, when its last regional summit, due to political differences, particularly between Algeria and Morocco on the Western Sahara conflict.

Mr. Fihri has also regretted that the establishment of a free trade area is in the planning stage, while the borders remain closed between Algeria and Morocco.

Accelerating the establishment of a free trade area and a pool for investment and foreign trade were the agenda of the 28th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the 'AMU.

Remember, however, that the Algerian Press Agency, two young Sahrawis were injured last week in the explosion of an antipersonnel mine in Western Sahara, during a demonstration denouncing the "wall of shame" constructed by the Morocco in the 1980s.

The explosion occurred when young Saharans tried to remove a section of fence installed along the wall during a demonstration attended by 3,000 people to denounce what the Polisario calls "wall of shame ".

Morocco had protested against the entry the night before "in the zone near MAHB" of "some 1,400 people, including foreigners" (..) "in flagrant violation of the military agreements reached under UN auspices, in a statement by the Interior Ministry. He was reported before the Security Council of the United Nations.

In order to attack the Polisario, Morocco has built in the 1980s a "berm" (north / south) in Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony annexed by Rabat in 1975. The Polisario claims the territory's independence while Morocco offers a wide autonomy under its sovereignty.

In a report issued Tuesday, the UN Secretary-General has not shown some skepticism about the chances of a speedy resolution of this conflict.

Ban Ki-moon has estimated that the positions of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Saharawi independence movement was "too far apart on how to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable for self-determination of the people of Western Sahara".

It must be noted that for a year, no issue was found. The four rounds of negotiations in Manhasset, a suburb of New York, have proved unsuccessful.
